This playlist really feels like a soundtrack I’d expect to hear while reading The Young Dread. I’ve picked atmospheric tracks, some of which feel like they could play on repeat in the background of Maud’s life. Maud doesn’t listen to music, of course, so the songs I’ve chosen here evoke loneliness and action and vast spaces.
1. SOON THE WORLD, Plan B
This is just a creepy intro to this story and this playlist.
2. FAMILIAR, Nils Frahm
Maud climbing to the eagle’s nest and seeing the sun come up from that high perch, and thinking about following the bird out into the sky, even if it means she will fall.
3. SILENT TREATMENT, The Joy Formidable
This song feels like Maud’s acceptance of her solitary life and her understanding that she will never be a normal person, will always be apart.
4. BACKSIDE GRIND PT. II, Plan B
This song tells a story in French about losing yourself in heart of the woods, tangling with roots, being breathed in by the trees.
5. M, Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm
Maud tearing through the forest, running faster than any human should be able to run, sensing the life of the hunters and hunted in the woods, and the moonlight, and the empty night before her.
